Add Video From Media Space to Canvas

Back to Media Space Tutorials

Once you’ve uploaded video to My Media in Media Space, you can share it with students in your D2L course. Your Zoom Cloud recordings are also saved to your Media Space after you’ve logged into your account at least once.

Publish your video to Unlisted

The first step is always to make sure your video is published as Unlisted, not Private.

  1. Go to http://media.pdx.edu
  2. Click on PSU User.
  3. Click Login.
  4. On the PSU Single Sign-On page, enter your ODIN username and password, then confirm with Duo.
  5. In Media Space, click your name in the upper right corner, and select My Media.
  6. Find your video in the list, and click on it.
  7. Find the Actions menu in the lower right.
  8. Click the + Publish option in the list.
  9. In the publishing settings below the video, make sure that your video is set to Unlisted.
  10. Click Save.

Media maybe added to a Canvas in several ways, depending on the source and how you want it displayed. When sharing media from Kaltura Media Space you must publish that file to unlisted rather than private.

  1. Upload a media file to play in a Canvas page.
  2. Record a media file to play in a Canvas page.
  3. Link to an external media source in the Rich Content Editor (note that the YouTube “App” option is not available).
  4. Link to an external media source from a Module.
Note: for Media Space files and most other media hosts, select the “Load in a new tab” checkbox.
Canvas add external URL to modules UI, Load in new tab checkbox.
  5. Embed external media by inserting embed code into the Rich Content Editor. (This works for Media Space videos with the same results as the next option).

Embed a Media Space video or audio with the Kaltura LTI menu option

  1. In your course, navigate to the page where you want to embed a file from your My Media list (make sure the file is published to unlisted).
  2. Select the Apps icon (an electrical plug) and select Embed Kaltura Media.
    Kaltura LTI icon and menu.
  3. Search for the media file you want, position your cursor in the Rich Content Editor where you want the media, and select the blue </>Embed button.
  4. Save and publish your page.

Note: the Kaltura Media Gallery option is not recommended for use in Canvas. Kaltura Video Quizzes may be used, but because browser settings can prevent some students from being assessed, it’s not recommended as a graded activity.

Media Space Permissions and how to share via URL

Back to Media Space Tutorials

Media Permission Levels

  • Private: Private media is viewable in your account only. No other account can see a private video.
  • Unlisted: An unlisted video is viewable by anyone with the direct link. This is the recommended setting for sharing videos with your students.
  • Published: If you have a situation where you need to set very specific access to a video, you can create a channel, and publish a video to that channel. If, for example, you want to share a video with a select group of students, but don’t want any one else to see it, you can use a channel.

To share media access with others, you need to change the default Private setting to Unlisted. Instructions are in this Share Media Via URL tutorial.

Channel Membership Roles

  • Channel Owner: The channel owner is the person who created the channel. Only the owner can delete the channel.
  • Channel Manager: A channel manager can view channel content, add media to the channel, moderate channel content, and manage users.
  • Channel Moderator: A channel moderator can view channel content, add media to the channel, and moderate channel content.
  • Channel Contributor: A channel contributor can view channel content and add media to the channel.
  • Channel Member: A member can view the channel content.

Channel Types

  • Private Channel: media in a Private channel can only be viewed or modified by by channel members.
