Add video to Canvas with MediaSpace

Once you have media files saved to MediaSpace, you can share them with students in your Canvas course as embedded videos that students can play right in a Canvas page or via links to MediaSpace posted in Canvas pages or modules.

Before sharing any media with your students, verify accurate captions are present.

1. Publish your video to unlisted

The first step is always to make sure your video is published as Unlisted, not Private.

  1. Navigate to media.pdx.edu
  2. Select PSU User.
  3. Select Login.
  4. Enter your Odin username and password on the PSU Single Sign-On page, then confirm with Duo.
  5. In MediaSpace, select your name in the upper right corner, and select My Media.
  6. Find your video in the list, and select the title. This will take you to the video’s main page.
  7. Find the Actions (1) menu in the lower right.

2. Option A: Embed a MediaSpace video or audio with the Canvas Kaltura LTI

You may wish to embed your media right in a Canvas page so students can watch your video without leaving Canvas.

  1. In your Canvas course, navigate to the page where you want to embed media from your My Media list (make sure the file is published to unlisted).
  2. Select the Apps icon (an electrical plug) and select Embed Kaltura Media.
“Embed Kaltura Media” button
  1. Search for the media file you want, position your cursor in the Rich Content Editor where you want the media, and select the blue </>Embed button.
  2. Save and publish your Canvas page.

Note: the Kaltura Media Gallery option is not recommended for use in Canvas. Kaltura Video Quizzes may be used, but because browser settings can prevent some students from being assessed, it’s not recommended as a graded activity.

3. Option B: Add media to Canvas via a URL

In some cases, you may want to share a video via a link instead of embedded in Canvas page. When sharing media from MediaSpace via URL, you must publish that file to unlisted rather than private as outlined in step 1 above.

  1. Log into media.pdx.edu
  2. Select the button with your name on it in the upper right corner, and then select My Media.
  3. Find your video in the list, and select the title of the video. This will take you to the video’s specific page.Select the Share tab below the video.
  4. Copy the web address from the Link to Media Page tab. This is the link that can be shared with others.
    • Link to an external media source in the Rich Content Editor (note that the YouTube “App” option is not available).
    • Link to an external media source from a Module. Note: for MediaSpace files and most other media hosts, select the Load in a new tab checkbox (2).
