Building on our remote experiences during the past few terms, PSU will continue offering several course designations. We’ve outlined basic definitions of the new designations below and included recommended considerations for teaching across these course types. Online and hybrid course designations have not changed due to remote operations and are not covered below.


With Scheduled Meetings

Class generally takes place over Zoom sessions for lecture and active learning.

  • Prioritize interaction and active learning and make a detailed class plan.
  • Set expectations for Zoom sessions and get student feedback on what’s working or not.
  • Use short, ungraded knowledge checks to assess learning during every session.
  • Record class sessions and shorten as appropriate, pairing with asynchronous learning experiences.

With No Specific Meeting Times

Class generally takes place via D2L and recorded mini-lectures.

In-Person Meeting

Class happens in-person with strict enrollment caps, social distancing and other safety protocols in place.

Dual Delivery

Combines In-person meeting with Remote-scheduled meetings formats.

  • Make a detailed class plan for interacting with students in two modalities at the same time.
  • Plan in-class knowledge checks that can occur across modalities (e.g. using clickers, polling, chat and in-class discussions).
  • Share any links or resources with students ahead of time.
  • Request custom crosslist of D2L shell from OAI Faculty Support Desk prior to start of term.
  • Contact OIT Classroom AV for assistance with your in-class technology.
  • Also review all the recommendations for in-person and remote-scheduled meetings formats.

Quick Tips for All Modalities

  • Consider flexible teaching strategies, which can be implemented and adapted across modalities.
  • Balance your expectations and student workload to credit hours. A good rule of thumb is about 2-3 hours of homework per credit hour of course plus about 1 hour of instruction per credit hour per week. So a 3 credit course would have about 3 hours of instruction and 6-9 hours of homework per week. As you shift some activities to asynchronous formats, make sure you aren’t overloading students.
  • Students may need additional flexibility to meet course goals. With planning, you can design for equity and inclusion in your remote courses.
  • Make backup plans for technology glitches, illness, or sudden changes to operations. Share them with your students ahead of time. Back up plans can be as simple as asking students to check their email for alternative instructions from you or participating in a D2L discussion.
  • Use your D2L course shell as a digital home for your course. Share digital versions of all course materials in D2L. Organize the D2L shell chronologically by week.
