Back to D2L Tutorials

This article assumes that you have already created a discussion topic, and a grade item, and linked the two together. However, you can now grade and leave feedback on Discussions without a grade item — students will see a private score and feedback just above the Thread they created. To do this, select the Topic Assessment tab and enter a score value but don’t create or select a Grade Item.

When you are ready to enter scores, follow these steps. Scores entered in the discussion topic should be automatically transferred to the grade book.

Enter student scores

  1. Click on Activities and then Discussions, from the course navigation bar.
  2. Find your topic in the list, and click the context menu to the right of the title.
  3. Click Assess Topic from the list.
  4. Find the student you want to grade in the list, and click on the Topic Score link underneath their name.
Note that you can also use the View By drop down to sort by Group rather than User, at the top of the page.
  5. Review the student’s posts in the body of the page. Use the General Feedback box to provide text comments as needed. When you are ready to enter a score, click the numbers next to the Topic Score field in the upper right hand corner of the page.
  6. Leave written or video feedback (for video, select the “insert stuff” icon). Only the student you selected will see this feedback.
  7. Select the Publish button at the bottom of the student thread pop-up window. if you want to release scores and feedback as you go. If you prefer to release them when you’re finished grading all students, follow the instructions below.
