Join us in advancing the future of Digital Learning.

Maintaining a robust digital learning environment requires active community involvement and constant exploration. We’re always seeking input from the PSU community about what is working, what isn’t, and what they wish they could do with technology that they currently can’t. We regularly host “Discovery” groups made of up faculty and staff to address these needs and assess alternative platforms.

December 2017 - June 2020

PSU’s contract with D2L Brightspace is up in June of 2021. The timing is right for us to ask whether Brightspace can support the student engagement and success goals PSU has established for its future, and if not, whether one of the LMS alternatives (Canvas and Aula) being piloted during Winter and Spring terms 2020 is better poised to do so.
From January through June 2020, an LMS Advisory Committee of representatives from all of the Colleges, Student Services, the Library, OIT, and Faculty Senate will convene to consider this question, and to advise campus leadership on how to proceed. You can learn more about the project, including how you can give feedback and get involved.

Video Services

February 2018 - August 2018

For several years, PSU had three centrally supported video services for campus use as well as a wide range of small scale tools in use. This was because the platforms, at one point, had distinctly different functions: lecture capture, and video creation and streaming. However, these products began to converge and overlap in functionality. This discovery committee was tasked with assessing the needs for lecture capture and multimedia creation and streaming, and choose one streamlined solution that fit those needs . The committee’s recommendation was to retire the current lecture capture platform (Echo 360) and to maximize the lecture capture functionalities of the current streaming services, Kaltura.

Virtual Classroom/Web Conferencing Discovery

May 2019 - August 2019

The purpose of this Discovery Committee is to and assess the functionality of Zoom as it compares to Blackboard Collaborate, as a Virtual Classroom and Web Conferencing solution. Specifically, we will review the results of the Zoom pilots currently running at PSU and the financial and technical implications of implementing Zoom, explore the current use of Collaborate, specifically focusing on functionalities that may be lost if Collaborate is deprecated and the intersections between Zoom’s potential as a lecture capture/Global Classroom solution and the planned deprecation of Echo360, make the call to either replace Collaborate with Zoom or not, and establish a plan for communicating with with faculty if Collaborate is deprecated.

Academic Integrity: Proctoring

July 2018 - July 2019

The scope of this project is to select one vendor and service for use by a defined number of enrollments/classes with a high need, within the budget. Investment in an enterprise level contract is out of scope but the project will consider the potential for such a contract in the future based on interest, need and pricing.
