Give a Student Extra Time or Attempts for a Quiz

You can grant special access to individual students who may need more time to take the quiz, different start or end dates, or allow for late submissions. These settings can be used to fulfill Disability Resource Center (DRC) accommodations in some cases.

Note these steps can be repeated, if multiple students need different access settings.

  1. Click on Activities and then Quizzes from your course navigation bar.
  2. Click on the quiz you want to edit from the list.
  3. Click the Restrictions tab.
  4. Scroll down to the Special Access section at the bottom of the page.
  5. Click the Allow selected users special access to this quiz radio button.
  6. Click the Add Users to Special Access button.
  7. Set your conditions:
    1. Choose a Start and/or End Date, and timing restrictions.
    2. Check the Override attempts allowed box if the student needs additional attempts; use the Attempts Allowed dropdown to choose the number of attempts.
    3. Under the Users section, search for users by ODIN or name, or find the student in the list.
    4. Click the checkbox next to the user's name, and click Add Special Access.
  8. Click Save and Close to finish.

Student Instructions for Viewing Quiz Answers

Your instructor has given you access to quiz answers for review. Here's how to access them:

  1. Click on Activities and then Quizzes from the course navigation bar.
  2. Click on the menu to the right of the title of the quiz, and select Submissions.
  3. Click on an Attempt to view the quiz solution and/or quiz feedback.

 


Release Quiz Answers to Students

After students finish taking a quiz in D2L, you can release the answers to students for review. You decide the date, time, and duration for which the answers are available. The settings responsible for releasing or withholding quiz answers are called Submission Views.

Create Submission View

  1. Click on Activities and then Quizzes from your course navigation bar.
  2. Find your quiz in the list, and click the menu to the right of the title.
  3. Click Edit from the menu list.
  4. Click on the Submission Views tab.
  5. Click the Add Additional Views button.
  6. Enter a title in the Name field, e.g., "Quiz 2 Answers".
  7. Set a Date and Time for answers to be released under the View Restrictions section. Generally speaking, you want to pick a date and time after the quiz grades for all students are recorded.
  8. Under View Details, select Yes, and pick one of the secondary options. Show all questions with user responses is the most common choice.
  9. Check the box for Show question answers.
  10. Click Save.

How Students View Quiz Answers

Once students have access to quiz answers, you can share these directions for viewing.

  1. Click on Activities and then Quizzes from the course navigation bar.
  2. Click on the menu to the right of the title of the quiz, and select Submissions.
  3. Click on an Attempt to view the quiz solution.

 


Create a New Multiple Choice Quiz

The quiz tool is used to administer timed online tests. This article provides instructions for setting up an automatically graded test, using multiple choice, true or false, and multi-select question types. Quizzes set up using additional question types (such as the written response type) must be at least partially manually graded.

Create a New Quiz

  1. Click on Activities and then Quizzes from your course navigation bar.
  2. Click on the New Quiz button.
  3. Enter a quiz Name in the text box.
  4. Click on the Restrictions tab.
  5. Optionally, use the Start Date and End Date fields to set a range of time when students can take the quiz.
  6. You can use the Status field at any time to activate the quiz. While the quiz is set to inactive, students will not be able to see or take the quiz, regardless of the start and end dates set.
  7. Click on the Assessment tab.
  8. Under Automatic Grade, check the box for Allow attempt to be set as graded immediately upon completion.
  9. Choose a Grade Item from the dropdown menu. Click the add grade item link if you need to create an item.
  10. Check the box for Allow automatic export to grades.
  11. Under Attempts, choose the number of allowed attempts per student.
  12. Click Save and Close.

Create Quiz Questions

Now that you have your quiz settings configured, you can add questions. These instructions include how to set up a simple multiple choice quiz.

  1. Click on Activities and then Quizzes from your course navigation bar.
  2. Find your quiz in the list, and click the menu to the right of the title.
  3. Click on Edit from the list.
  4. Click the Add/Edit Questions button, from the Quiz Questions section.
  5. Click the New button, and choose Multiple Choice Question (MC) from the list.
  6. If you get a message about the new Quiz Creation Experience, click the Leave It On button.
  7. Enter the Question Text in the text box.
  8. Enter Answers in the provided short answer fields. Use the Add Answer link to add additional answer options beyond the default four.
  9. Check the circle next to the correct answer.
  10. Enter a number into the Points box. It is possible to enter decimal values, but that can lead to rounding errors. Use a whole number for best results.
  11. Click the menu on the Save button, and click Save and New from the list.
  12. Repeat steps 5-11 as needed to create your multiple choice quiz. Note that the total point value of your quiz is determined by the value of each quiz question, added together.
