Use Turnitin GradeMark to Annotate and Grade Assignments

A secondary feature of Turnitin is a grading and annotation tool, called GradeMark. You can use GradeMark to share in-line comments and feedback with your students. There are a few specific settings you’ll need to make this work; this article only lists the steps needed to allow your students to view their GradeMark feedback in Turnitin, but not the Originality Report (the anti-plagiarism feature).

This article covers:

Enabling Turnitin Grademark for an Assignment Folder

  1. From your D2L course, click on Activities and then Assignments from the course navigation bar.
  2. Find your assignment folder in the list, and click the menu to the right of the title.
  3. Click Edit Submission Folder from the drop down menu.
  4. Click on the Turnitin tab.
  5. Check the box for Enable GradeMark® for this folder.
  6. Enable, Automatically sync grades as Draft in Brightspace, optionally. (This step is highly recommended if the assignment will be graded and you are using the D2L gradebook.)
  7. Click Save.

Using the GradeMark Tool

  1. From your D2L course, click on Activities and then Assignments from the navigation bar.
  2. Click on your assignment folder from the list to view submissions.
  3. In the Turnitin GradeMark column, click the pencil icon to Edit or View GradeMark information for the selected paper.
  4. Find the sidebar on the right of the page. Clicking on the blue icons opens the grading interface. If you need help using the feedback tools, see Turnitin’s Grading Tools support article.
  5. Optionally, enter a score in the Turnitin score field. Turnitin only accepts whole number values.
  6. Scores and feedback are saved automatically. Close the browser tab, and return to D2L when you finish.
Note: Feedback will not be visible to students until it is published in D2L.

Make GradeMark Feedback Visible to Students

Your students can’t see the GradeMark feedback you leave until feedback is published in D2L. Scores entered into the Turnitin site are not published to D2L. Once you have entered feedback and/or scores in Turnitin, complete the following steps to publish the feedback.

Note: In order for GradeMark scores to publish to the D2L gradebook, the D2L assignment must be connected with a grade item in D2L.

  1. From your D2L course, click on Activities and then Assignments from the course navigation bar.
  2. Click on the assignment folder that you want to assess.
  3. Scroll down to the list of file submissions.
  4. A feedback icon and/or score will be present next to each submission for which you have provided feedback and/or graded via Turnitin.
  5. Select the box next to each student whose score/feedback you are ready to publish. Alternately, you may select the box in the upper left corner of the student list to select all users on the page.
  6. Click the Publish Feedback button at the top of the list.
  7. Confirm your choice via the dialogue box.
  8. GradeMark feedback will now be visible to students.
